Why this exists
Every online background remover asks for the same thing first: your photo, uploaded. For most of the industry that's just how the plumbing works — the AI lives on their GPUs, so your image has to travel to it. We built the opposite plumbing. Cutaway downloads the AI to you (about 40 MB, once, cached), and from then on every cutout happens inside your browser tab. Product shots under NDA, your kids' photos, your passport scan — none of it ever leaves your machine, and the live privacy monitor on the page lets you verify that claim instead of trusting it.
Why it's free without a catch
Cloud tools meter free usage because every image costs them GPU time. Our marginal cost per image is zero — your device does the work — so the things competitors charge for (full resolution, batch processing, no watermark, commercial use) are simply free here, without limits. During launch there are no accounts, no subscriptions, no feature paywalls, and no payment step.
What's next
The same on-device approach extends naturally to other everyday image chores — compression, format conversion, passport photo framing. Cutaway is the first tool in that family.
